Description

No. 39 Canonbury Street is a detached house dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, standing on a tall rubblestone plinth, and features a pantile roof with brick end stacks that are external to the left. The main central range has a 20th-century lean-to on the left and a small single-storey wing on the right, which was previously used for non-domestic purposes. The house is two storeys high and has three windows on the upper floor, which are 12-pane sashes with splayed brick voussoirs. The ground floor has two similar windows, with a central doorcase that is accessed by a flight of five stone steps leading up to a platform. The doorcase is topped by a sloping wooden hood supported on consoles and features a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed and the rest fielded. The wing to the right originally had four windows with cambered heads, but the outer two are now bricked in, while the central two have leaded casements. This house is said to have been a former cooperage for Berkeley Castle.
