Description

The Chantry is a detached house that was formerly a vicarage, built in the early 18th century. It features incised render and a hipped slate roof with coved eaves cornice, along with three large rendered stacks. The building has a square shape and includes a 19th-century twin-range extension to the rear on the left. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has five windows, which are 12-pane sashes with moulded stone architraves. The ground floor has four similar windows and a central doorcase flanked by attached Doric columns on bases, topped with an entablature. The door is a six-panel design with fielded panels and a radial fanlight above. There is also a central hipped dormer with six panes. The Chantry is notable as the home and death-place of Edward Jenner, who lived from 1749 to 1823 and is known for discovering vaccination.
