Description
A terrace of five houses located on Southgate Street in Gloucester, dating to the early 19th century with later alterations. The houses are constructed of brick, with the fronts of numbers 123 and 127 stuccoed and painted white, and feature stone detailing, slate roofs, and brick stacks topped with ceramic chimney pots. The houses are arranged as double-depth blocks, with service wings at the rear.
The three-storey buildings are set back from the street, with a stone string course marking the sill level of the first floor. A moulded cornice and blocking course run along the top. The entrance doorways are closely spaced and accessed by flights of stone steps leading to six-panel doors, each with a rectangular fanlight featuring glazing bars in a diamond pattern. The doorcases include panelled pilasters and console brackets supporting cornices, although the doorcase at number 129 has been removed. Large sash windows with glazing bars are located to the sides of the doorways at numbers 123, 125, and 127, with later plain sashes at numbers 129 and 131. The first floor of each house has two sashes with 3x4 panes, while the second floor has two shorter sashes with 3x2 panes, except for a replaced pivoting sash at number 125. The windows are set within flat-arched openings with five raised-and-stepped voussoirs and projecting stone sills. The surrounds for the first and second-floor windows at number 125, which are wider and linked, may represent a later alteration. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
