Description

A terrace of three houses located at 51, 53, and 55 Brunswick Road, Gloucester, built around 1820, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of stuccoed brick with slate roofs and brick stacks within the party walls. They are arranged as replicated, double-depth blocks, each with a rear wing.

The exterior presents three storeys, along with semi-basements and an attic with dormers. All three houses have identical facades. The basements and ground floors feature rusticated stucco. The upper floors are defined by a giant order of shallow pilasters, each decorated with a moulded, running fret pattern and anthemion capitals supporting a crowning dentil cornice with a frieze band and a blocking course. A continuous cantilevered balcony with decorative wrought-iron balustrade and dividing panels runs across the first floor. A raised band with a moulded vine pattern adorns the second floor between the pilasters. Stone steps lead to the entrance doorways on the ground floor of each house, with semicircular arched heads featuring a moulded mask decoration in the rusticated stucco voussoirs. A decorative metal fanlight sits above each doorway, except for No. 51, which has a fielded 5-panel door with an oval moulding in the lower panel. Sash windows are present on all floors; the originals were glazed with 4x3 panes, but in Nos. 51 and 55 these have been replaced with plain sashes. The first floor features tall sashes with 3x4 panes, and the second floor has shorter sashes with 3x3 panes, each having a large, moulded stucco laurel wreath above. Projecting stone sills are found on the ground and second-floor window openings. The interior was not inspected at the time of listing.
