Description

A pair of terrace houses at 47 and 49 Brunswick Road, Gloucester, dating from the mid-19th century and later altered. They are constructed of stuccoed brick with slate roofs and brick stacks on the party walls. The houses are of a replicated, double-depth block design with rear wings projecting to the left.

The exterior is three storeys high, with a semi-basement and attic. The basements and ground floors are rusticated. A continuous cantilevered balcony with decorative wrought-iron balustrade, separated by a dividing panel, runs across the first floor. A raised band is visible on the second floor, and a continuous crowning cornice with a frieze band tops the frontages. The attic storey, with a coped parapet, is likely a later addition. Flights of stone steps lead to doorways with semicircular arched heads, each containing a decorative metal fanlight – an umbrella pattern on No. 47 and a batswing pattern on No. 49. The ground floor windows feature sashes; No. 47 has a sash with 4x4 glazing bars, while No. 49 has a later plain sash. The first floors have two tall sashes with glazing bars (3x5 panes), with the lower sashes of No. 49 replaced by plain glass. Basement windows are casements with 4x4 glazing bars. The second and attic floors each feature two sashes with glazing bars – 3x4 panes on the second floor and 3x3 panes in the attic. The ground and second floor sashes are in openings with projecting stone sills. The interior has not been inspected. The property was not shown on Causten's map of 1843.
