Description
Mead Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed farmhouse located on Sedbury Lane in Tidenham. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and is constructed of fine limestone ashlar over a sandstone plinth. The building features plain strings, a small cornice, and a parapet with a blind balustrade above the window bays. The returns are rendered, and the roofs are concealed, likely covered with slate.
The farmhouse has three storeys and a basement, with five windows that showcase early to mid-18th century glazing bar sashes, arranged in a 9 over 12 over 12-pane configuration. The ground and first floors have deep sash or blind boxes above the heads of the windows, and stone cills. The central entrance consists of a six-panel fielded door with a transom light above, set within a segmental head and topped with a segmental hood supported by consoles. This door is accessed by seven steps leading to a landing, with single iron railings that sweep at the bottom of the steps.
The rear of the building is identical to the front, although the windows are likely from 1774 and include a four-panel flush door with a flat hood. On the left return wall, there is a rain-water head with "WW 1774" cast into it, and a stone bearing the inscription 'Restored 1906 WHM'. Inside, the farmhouse retains all original 18th-century doors, doorcases, and shutters, along with a dog-leg staircase featuring turned balusters. Overall, Mead Farmhouse is a charming and well-preserved example of its architectural period.
