Description

The Elizabethan Barn, located behind the Post Office, is a store that likely dates from the late 16th century. It features a random rubble stone rear wall on the south gable and a ground floor that is mostly below the level of the adjacent churchyard. The barn is timber-framed with brick on stone infill above and has a tiled roof.

This structure has a five-bay, two-storey design, with the churchyard side displaying nearly all two-panel high timber-framing above. There are two tension braces on the right in the third and fourth panels, and a carved head of a now-blocked four-light window in the second panel. A brick chimney interrupts the framing in the sixth panel, and further to the left, there are two braces supporting the wall plate from a post. The left gable is rendered and features wide carriage doors at the ground floor.

The rear wall is made of stone and includes one two-light timber casement window, one three-light window on the first floor, and a door with external timber stairs. Inside, the barn originally had two rooms with collar and tie-beam trusses that included angle struts, although the struts are now missing. A later lime-plaster floor has been inserted at the tie-beam level, which survives over only three bays.
