Description
This is a barn dating from the mid-16th century, originally timber-framed, and encased in stone likely in the early 18th century. It is located in Barwick in Elmet and Scholes, off York Road. The barn is single-aisled and has seven bays. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a corrugated iron roof, replacing the original stone slate. A full-height cart entry is centrally positioned in the fifth bay, featuring doors hinged on posts with mortises indicating the presence of a bottom rail, mid rail, and brace to the wall-plate. There are also mortises in the soffit of this wall-plate, possibly suggesting that the doorway is not original. Low ventilators are located to the right of the cart entry, along with a post displaying similar mortises, indicating that this side was timber-framed and that the barn was originally single-aisled to the rear. An outshut of three bays, of no particular interest, has been added to the right. A clear break in the masonry at the left end of the barn indicates the addition of a bay. The rear of the barn has a long, sloping roof to the aisle. The corners are quoined. An added bay set back to the right end has rubble masonry above a ground-floor plinth, possibly suggesting a former timber frame. The interior is finely timbered, with posts on padstones featuring jowelled heads and curved braces to both the arcade-plate and the tie beam of the roof trusses. The roof trusses have tall king posts braced to a square-set ridge, originally without struts, with struts added later to support a single purl. The rafters have been renewed. Aisle-ties have strutted principals and mortises for wall-posts and braces on the soffit of the tie. The interior is considered impressive and rare for the region.
