Description

Kirkfield Cottage is a late 18th-century house located on Thorner Church Hill. The front facade is of hammer-dressed stone, while the sides and rear are of coursed rubble, with a stone slate roof. The house has a two-cell central plan, built against a staircase, with a rear wing. It is two storeys high. The front has two first-floor windows. Ashlar quoins define the corners. A slightly off-centre doorway has monolithic jambs and an overlight. The flanking bays have windows with deep lintels, projecting sills, and thin monolithic jambs (now painted), all retaining their original 12-pane sashes. A gable stack is visible to the right. A large external stack is positioned on the left gable, displaying shouldered offsets and an ashlar top with a cyma-moulded cornice. The single-cell rear wing has a single bay of windows in its left return and a doorway in its right return.
