Description
Church Cottage is a house in a row dating from the 16th century. It features a timber-framed structure with wattle and daub infill on the first floor and brick nogging on the ground floor, all resting on a stone plinth, topped with a slate roof. The building is three bays wide and two storeys tall, with a jettied first floor.
The street-facing facade has timber framing that is two panels high on the left side, and a three-light casement window on the right, which was originally a five-light window with chamfers on the bressumer. There is an opening to a cellar below. The doorway has a plain, chamfered surround with a four-centred arch on the right half of the centre bay, leading to a boarded door that is two-thirds the height of the opening, which opens into a passage. On the right side, there is a four-pane window and a boarded door beyond, with a missing rail from the framing.
The first floor jetties out and is supported by brackets on the main beams. The front of the main posts on the ground floor is moulded, continuing the line of the bracket. The first floor features two unequal panels high framing, with curved downward braces in the upper panels from the main posts. The lower panels are set back behind a chamfer on the framing, with remains of moulding on the rail. The windows in the left bays are 20th century with a mullion and transom, two-light design, while the right bay contains an 18th-century window with an iron casement, all fitted with leaded lights.
Inside, the passage behind the doorway in the centre is open partway across the house, showcasing original timber framing with blocked doorways on each side. The right-hand bay of the roof features a collar and tie beam truss with trapped purlins and slight principal rafters.
