Description
The Old Town Hall is a town hall built in the early 18th century. It is constructed from well-squared grey Forest stone with regular coursing, featuring red Forest voussoirs for the arches, capitals, and bases of the piers. The building has a shingle roof and is designed with three by two bay arcades on the ground floor, standing two stories tall and oriented towards High Street.
The arcades have semi-circular arches with plain voussoirs on all sides, supported by plain square piers that rest on chamfered bases. The capitals are simple, with a vertical face above a small echinus moulding. Each stone in the capital has vertical furrows on its face, which are interrupted by short horizontal furrows at the ends or corners. Around 1920, the arches were infilled to create a club on the ground floor.
There is a plain string course at the first floor level, with two windows on the sides and one on the street end. These windows are square-headed wooden casements with mullions and transoms, dating from around 1900. At the back of the right-hand return window, there was originally a doorway, likely with external steps. The roof is hipped, and there is a brick chimney stack at the rear.
