Description

Nos 1 and 2 Almshouse are semi-detached houses built in 1857, as indicated by the datestone. They are constructed from squared, roughly coursed stone with ashlar dressings and feature a tiled roof. The buildings are arranged in an L-plan and have a gable facing the road, standing one-and-a-half storeys tall.

The entry porch is set diagonally in the angle of the buildings and has a shouldered lintel above the doorway, which is topped by a pointed arch that contains a shield and leaf carving, with a hoodmould above. The door is boarded. To the right of the porch, there is a lancet window. The porch roof is gabled with swept eaves and plain bargeboards.

On the left gable of the house, there is a 3-light stone window with trefoil heads on the equal-height lights, situated below a relieving arch. Above this, there is a 2-light window without a relieving arch. On the right return, there is a single lancet window, and the gable mirrors the design of the porch.

The right-hand gable features a plain, chamfered plinth with corner buttresses extending from the plinth to the side walls. The ground floor includes a recessed canted bay with ashlar voussoirs above, featuring a 2-light window in the center. The gable and window above are similar to those on the left gable. Lateral chimneys are present, and the shield on the building is carved with "HD," while the lintel above the door reads 'AD mdccclvii'.
