Description

This timber-framed barn, originally dating from the 15th or early 16th century, was later converted into a house in the late 20th century. The ground floor has exposed timber framing with brick infilling in alternating panels of herringbone and stretcher bond. The first floor has plaster infilling, with the right-hand (south) gable end weatherboarded. The roof is covered in plain tiles and is steeply hipped.

The barn originally comprised five bays, including a central midstrey. A red and grey brick plinth in English bond runs along the base. Architectural details include two arch braces to each end bay and one to the second bay from the left, as well as full-height intermediate posts. A short 20th-century brick stack is located on the front slope of the roof towards the centre.

The fenestration is irregular: four small first-floor windows are present, with none to the left, a single small rectangular window visible behind the vertical boarding, one rectangular light and one small louvred light to the right of the boarding, and a final small pane towards the right end. The central bay has black-painted vertical boarding, marking the original location of barn doors, now containing a boarded pedestrian door at the base. A further boarded door is located towards the right end.

A central rear porch is constructed of brick up to mid-rail, weatherboarding above, with a hipped plain tile roof. A weatherboarded rear lean-to extends to the left. The interior, which was not inspected, is said to contain a crown-post roof.
