Description

Burford Farm House is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with a late 17th-century addition and 19th and 20th-century alterations. Originally timber framed, the front elevation is now constructed of buff brick in stretcher bond, topped with a plain tile roof. The original 16th-century house consists of two storeyed timber-framed bays, with a smoke bay at the right gable end. A later 17th-century bay was added to the right, and a 20th-century cross-wing was added to the left. The building has two storeys, and the left gable end of the 16th-century section was formerly jettied. The roof is hipped to the right, and the 20th-century wing projects forward with a half-hipped roof. There is a brick stack on the front slope of the roof, positioned to the right of centre. The fenestration is irregular, featuring four 3-light casements—one in the 20th-century wing and three in the main range. There are French doors to the left of the stack and a boarded door to the right. The interior has only been partly inspected but includes exposed beams, a late 17th-century stone fireplace, and a plain crown-post roof in the 16th-century section, with clasped purlins in the 17th-century end. This farmhouse exhibits a relatively uncommon plan form for the area.
