Description

Clapper House and Pump is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid 15th century, with early 17th century alterations, early 19th century additions, and early 20th century restoration. The building is timber-framed with rendered infilling and has a plain tile roof. It features a Wealden design with two roughly equal-length hall bays and storeyed end bays, the left end bay being slightly longer. The house has two storeys and stands on a stone plinth. The structure is close-studded, with jettied right and left end bays that have jetties returning and are underbuilt on plain dragon posts. There is a solid bracket under the central tie-beam and renewed solid-spandrel braces to the flying wall-plate. The left hall bay has a higher midrail and another rail just below the inner wall-plate.

The building has a multiple red and grey brick ridge stack at the centre of the left hall bay, and a projecting red and grey brick stack with a stone base at the right gable end. The fenestration is irregular, featuring four leaded casements: one three-light in each end bay and the right hall bay, and one two-light under the stack. There is also a seven-light ovolo-moulded mullion window on the first floor at the rear, along with a blocked doorway under the stack. A low stone lean-to wraps around the rear of the left end bay, with a timber-framed rear wall. At the back, there is a central single-storey red brick wing with a gable end stack, an internal brick copper-stand, and a boarded door on the right side. Next to the door is a pump with a plaque that reads "RB 1804".

Inside, the house features exposed framing, including a moulded octagonal crown post on a cambered tie-beam that is morticed for solid-spandrel braces and a fillet. There is a chamfer-stopped stone fireplace, which includes one on the first floor.
