Description
The Stores is a house that was formerly a shop and cottages, dating from the mid 16th century, with additions from the 17th and 18th centuries and later alterations in the 20th century. It is timber framed, featuring exposed framing with rendered infilling on the first floor and a rendered ground floor. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The building is said to have originally consisted of two timber-framed bays with a gable-end stack bay on the right, with an additional bay added to the right in the 17th century and another to the left in the 19th century. It has two storeys and a garret, with broadly spaced studding and one arch brace in each bay except for the left end. The roof is half-hipped on the left side. There is a multiple brick ridge stack in the second timber-framed bay from the right. The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring four late 20th century two-light casements. A 20th century ribbed door is located in a rendered porch under the stack. There is also a rear lean-to. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have a plain crown-post roof. This building represents a relatively uncommon plan form for the area.
