Description
The building is a barn located immediately east of Woodrow Farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century. It was originally used as an agricultural store, possibly a stable or dwelling. The barn is timber framed and covered with weatherboarding on a tarred plinth, featuring a later shallow-pitched roof made of single-roll clay tiles. There are later inserted double doors on the west side and lean-tos on the east side, with the east wall partly rendered and colourwashed.
Inside, the barn consists of four structural bays, with tie beams supported by jowled principal posts. There are arch-braces to the tie beams flanking the entrance bay. Each bay, except for the center bay on the east side, has mortises for 'diamond' window mullions in the underside of the wall plate. The window openings have shutter grooves, and the windows generally consist of four and five lights. The wall plate is chamfered with lamb's-tongue stops between the principal posts, and there are braces to the wall plate and gable-tie from the corner posts. The tie beam on the north side has mortises for a stud partition. The south gable shows evidence of ground floor and first floor mullioned windows, which are nine lights wide on the ground floor. The roof structure is later, with purlins supported off the tie beams, and some original rafters have been reused. There are also later gabled extensions to the north and south. The barn forms a group with Woodrow Farmhouse.
