Description
This building is a barn located immediately northwest of Home Farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century and extended in the 19th century. It is timber-framed, partly covered in weatherboarding, and features brick extensions. The roof is made of clay plain tiles with half-hipped ends and hipped midstreys, while there are slate lean-to roofs on the outshuts.
The barn has a five-bay plan with a threshing floor and midstreys in the central bay, along with an aisle on the southwest side. In the 19th century, brick outshuts were added to the northeast side, along with brick extensions at both ends.
On the southwest side, there is a hipped midstrey at the center, and the main roof extends to low eaves over the weatherboarded walls, with brick extensions at either end. The northeast side features a central hipped midstrey flanked by brick outshuts that have slate lean-to roofs, with the left outshut projecting.
Inside, the barn has slightly jowled wall and arcade posts, curved braces to the arcade-plate and tie-beams, and high collars with clasped purlins. The lower purlins include wind-braces, and the principal rafters have yokes at the apex supporting a diagonally-set ridgepiece, with intact common rafters. The wall framing between the posts has been replaced by brick on the northeast side.
