Description
The garden walls, dating to 1897, originally served Bowden Green House, which is now the Junior School of Pangbourne College. They were designed by Arnold Mitchell. The walls form the west, south, and east boundaries of a former rectangular kitchen garden.
The south wall is a low brick wall with stone copings and occasional square piers. The west and east walls are more decorative, standing over two metres high and featuring stepped angle buttresses at their southern ends and round-arched gateways. The east gate has stepped buttresses, a stepped coping, and an oculus above the gate arch, surrounded by tiles. This gateway is now closed with a modern wooden gate. The east elevation of the wall is stepped with two angled brick bands running horizontally, while the west elevation is plain. The west gate is similar to the east, although it lacks the stepped parapet and oculus. The west wall is stepped on its external (west) face, but has a flat internal (east) elevation. The coping of both side walls is formed from a band of horizontal tiles surmounted by header bricks.
The walls are built of red brick in an English bond with stone copings and tile decoration. Several buildings adjoin and incorporate sections of the walls, but only the garden walls themselves are considered to be of special interest. They were part of a complex of service buildings, which also included a coachman's cottage, stables, a pump/engine house, and a fowl house. The walls are of interest as well-preserved, elegant, and high-quality garden structures from the late 19th century, demonstrating the infrastructure needed to supply large country houses of that period and having group value with the adjacent fowl house and the Junior School.
