Description
Hawksbill Cottage is a Grade II listed building located on Pangbourne Road in Basildon. Originally two cottages from the 17th century, it has been converted into one residence with a mid-20th century addition at the rear.
The cottage is constructed with a timber frame, featuring white painted brick nogging and some rendered infill panels. It stands at one-and-a-half storeys, topped with a half hipped thatched roof. The roof includes an end stack to the south and an off-centre ridge stack to the north. The east-facing front has three eyebrow eaves dormers; the central dormer contains a three-light diamond leaded casement, while the end dormers each have two-light diamond leaded casements. The east front also features two ground floor three-light leaded casements, one on the left and one in the centre, flanking a smaller 20th-century leaded casement. There are boarded doors between the first and second windows from the left and another boarded door to the right, both sheltered by a thatched timber porch. To the left, there is a 20th-century white painted one-storey lean-to with a casement.
The interior has not been inspected. Hawksbill Cottage is recognized for its substantial 17th-century structure with exposed timber framing and a traditional thatched roof, as well as its group value with late 18th-century cottages located to the northwest on Pangbourne Road.
