Description
The Junior School, part of Pangbourne College, is a house dating from 1901, designed by Arnold Mitchell in a vernacular revival style. The exterior is primarily red brick on the ground floor with stone dressings, and has a dentil cornice above a first floor clad in shaped tiles. The roof is tiled in two ridges, with the rear ridge on the right-hand side being higher, and stacks are located behind the front left ridge, the rear right ridge, and within a service wing to the right. The building has one-and-a-half storeys. The left-hand block features two returned gables; the left gable is jettied at the eaves with a canted bay below, and the right gable is asymmetrically jettied with a similar canted bay. A two-storey canted bay with a bracketed gable is present in the right-hand block. There's also a two-storey square bay in the re-entrant angle between the blocks, featuring glazing on both floors. Leaded light casements are found throughout. A central arched entrance is on the left-hand block, and a bracketed gable with a composite square and round bay window is to the left. The rear facade is asymmetrical with a main entrance.
Inside, the entrance hall features an inglenook with tiles, mirrors, and embossed leatherwork above, alongside a staircase with square balusters that lessen in size, and painted plaster friezes. A billiard room is panelled with Ionic columns supporting a segmental vault decorated with floral motifs in a style reminiscent of Gimson. The building is remarkably complete and unaltered, both internally and externally.
