Description

The walled garden to the north of Bowood House dates from around 1760 to 1765. It features garden walls made of rubble stone, with brick piers on the outside and a brick lining that includes an ashlar plinth and coping on the inside. The garden is large and rectangular, with inner dividing walls that create four rectangular enclosures.

There are flush stone doorways, including a main south entry with an elliptical arch, panelled double doors, and a panelled arch-head. The entry has keystone and impost blocks. A shallow curved gateway is aligned in the main cross wall, and there is an elliptical-arched doorway on the north side with iron gates. Additionally, there is another arched-head doorway on the west wall, along with smaller square-headed doorways that have 9-panel doors located on the east wall, the north-west angle of the north wall, and the south-west angle of the west wall. Similar doorways without doors can be found at the north end of the spine wall and the west end of the cross wall.

At the north-west angle of the garden, there is a former apple store built of brick, featuring flush ashlar quoins, a plinth, a moulded stone cornice, and a brick parapet, topped with a rebuilt slate pyramid roof. This structure has three south-facing windows set in flush stone surrounds with keystones. The walled garden is also marked on the Powell map of 1763.
