Description
Lakeside Cottage is a picturesque cottage, possibly built around 1760, but designed in a style that reflects the early 19th century. It is constructed from squared ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof with eaves and end stacks, one of which has paired brick octagonal chimneys. The cottage has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window arrangement of stone mullion windows that include hoodmoulds and cast-iron lattice glazing. The lake-facing side has a combination of 2-light and 3-light windows above, along with a 2-light and a 1-3-1-light canted bay window below.
To the left, there is a single-storey brick-fronted section that has a similar 2-light window on both the front and the end wall, which also includes a bread oven. The north end wall is adorned with ornate barge boarding and features a 2-light window on the first floor to the right, as well as a ground floor stone-slate lean-to verandah supported by painted square timber posts. This verandah has two bays, with a third bay to the right that is advanced and features a gable in front of the door. The cottage is marked on maps from the 1770s, following the creation of the lake by Capability Brown.
