Description
The cascade and grottoes at the north end of the lake were built between 1785 and 1787 by the Honorable C. Hamilton of Painshill and J. Lane of Tisbury. This structure features cyclopean rockwork designed in a picturesque style, with several water outflows cascading over a high main outfall. To the south, there is an embankment with a grotto, while to the north, a sunken path lined with rockwork leads under a high rustic arch next to the cascade. This path extends eastward past the entrance to a serpentine tunnel that emerges above the cascade. Additionally, there is a rustic stone grotto located on the south side, west of the cascade. This site is recognized as an outstanding example of picturesque design.
