Description

The Hermits Cave, located at the north end of the lake, is a picturesque grotto built between 1785 and 1787 by Honorable C. Hamilton of Painshill and J. Lane of Tisbury. The cave features cyclopean rockwork, with its interior lined with tufa. The vault of the cave is adorned with ammonites that were collected by the Reverend J. Townsend of Pewsey, a notable geologist who lived from 1738 to 1816.
