Description
The garden wall to the west of Windlestone Hall School is likely from the early 19th century. It is constructed from English garden wall bond brick, featuring ashlar dressings and a flat stone coping. The wall stands approximately 4 metres high and forms the northern boundary of the former garden. It includes a central gateway flanked by flat Doric pilasters beneath an entablature with a triglyph frieze, which contains a round-headed arch surrounded by rusticated voussoirs. There are ball finials above the pilasters, and a low arch with radiating masonry is located at the left end of the wall. The wall incorporates occasional fragments of sculpture, likely added in the 20th century. It is noted that two Roman inscription stones were possibly set into this wall; one of these stones is now in the Bowes Museum, while the other is lost.
