Description
NZ 22 NE WINDLESTONE A 689 (South side) Windlestone Park
9/92 (inset) Garden wall to west of Windlestone Hall School GV II
Garden wall. Probably early C19. English garden wall bend brick (4 and one) with ashlar dressings and flat stone coping. Wall c.4 metres high forms north boundary of former garden, and has central gateway of flat Doric pilasters under entablature with triglyph frieze containing round-headed arch with voussoirs in rusticated surround. Ball finials above these and other pilasters. Low arch with radiating masonry at left end of wall. Occasional fragments of sculpture incorporated into wall probably in C20. It may have been in this wall that 2 Roman inscription stones were set, of which one is now in the Bowes Museum, and one is lost.
