Description

Bigsweir House is a detached country house built in the mid-18th century. It features cut and squared sandstone over a chamfered offset plinth, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof and a moulded wood eaves cornice. The house has end stacks, with the left stack made of brick and the right stack made of stone. A deep back wing is constructed of sandstone rubble and also has a Welsh slate roof.

The house is 2½ storeys tall with a basement and has five windows. There are three small 2-light hipped dormers above 12-pane sash windows, which have broad sash boxes, stone voussoirs, and stone cills. In the basement, there is a 2-light chamfered mullion casement window on the left and a similar window set back from a segmental head on the right.

At the front, there is a central pair of 20th-century glazed doors within a sandstone Roman Doric portico that has a pediment. This entrance is approached by eight steps with nosings and low walls that flare to piers with broad moulded cappings and urns. To the right of the main structure, there is a flat-roofed 20th-century extension. The left return of the house has one bay that matches the front, plus a blank opening. The back wing is two storeys tall but built into the slope of the land, making it appear as one storey from the back. The interior has not been inspected.
