Description
Bigsweir Bridge is a road bridge over the River Wye, built between 1826 and 1829. It is constructed from cast iron and sandstone. The bridge features a broad central clear span supported by four cast iron arches with W-strutting that rises to a slight hump-back. The sandstone abutments extend and include two flat segmental arches on each side. A simple handrail made of cast iron runs over diagonally set balusters with an indent mould, except in areas where it was replaced in the 20th century. The abutments rise from a heavy roll mould to a parapet with capping, which then runs back in segments to circular terminal piers. The walls continue similarly on either side over the stone segmental arches. The main handrails are spaced approximately 5 meters apart, while the round piers are about 8 meters apart. The ironwork for the bridge was cast at Merthyr Tydfil.
