Waterworks At Mork Cottage

ST BRIAVELS MORK CORNER, Mork SO 50 NE 2/258 Waterworks at Mork Cottage 5.1.88 - II Remains of water supply and distribution system. Mid C19. Sandstone, some squared work, some rubble. A stone dam with former sluices, flanked by a vaulted cistern to the south, and an open control tank to the north; the cistern with a brick vault. The dam with overflow has a drop of c 3 metres to the stream bed, over a width of c 2.5 metres, flanked by walls rising to non-coped top surface c 1 metre wide and with remnants of groove in upright stone each side for former gates. Walls return upstream each side for c 3 metres and on the north side a rectangular tank c 2.2 x 1.7 m overall with coped enclosing walls has grille inlet from stream and a cast iron outlet pipe said to have formerly supplied water power to generate electricity for Lindors below. Outlet from stream has large single stone lintol. On the south side, connected to the dam face by a rubble wall not bonded to the dam, an enclosed cistern with heavy raking buttress on the stream side and a vaulted cistern with overflow pipe. The cistern draws water from a small side spring, and supplied water to Lindors, below; some supply still drawn by a farm nearby. The whole has been silted up and overgrown, but is now (October 1987) under rescue and repair. It represents an interesting ensemble set to a steep but small stream to service a large Victorian house (Lindors), with consequent historic interest. There was formerly also a footbridge here, recorded an OS maps.
