Description
The complex comprises a draw-off tower, a tunnel mouth, a dam causeway, and a bridge, all dating to 1896 and designed by Hawkesley of London. The draw-off tower stands approximately 15 metres from the dam causeway, within the reservoir. It is constructed of red brick on a brick and stone plinth, with stone dressings, a frieze, a bracketed cornice, and a flat roof with a stone balustraded parapet. The tower is of square plan with an octagonal stair turret half-projecting from the right side, which continues above the roofline as a small octagonal stone turret with a dome and finial. An iron bridge leads to the entrance door, which has a stone surround and pediment. The tower features transomed one-light windows on its sides. Stone piers surmounted by carved obelisks are positioned at the corners of the roof, with a balustrade of rusticated stonework between them, matching that found on the tank and bridge (listed separately). Lead water spouts are located on the left and right sides. Opposite the draw-off tower, on the other side of the causeway, is a nearly round tunnel mouth for the draw-off pipe, featuring rusticated stonework with stone coping and granite rubble stone side embankments with stone coping. The causeway itself is built of granite rubble stone with a roadway between walls. A bridge at the northern end of the causeway carries a road over the reservoir overflow stream. This bridge has three depressed arches with brick undersides, dressed rusticated stone edges, granite rubble stone sides, and a parapet with stone copings. A stone cut water system with three cobbled stream beds runs along the reservoir side and continues beneath the bridge. This complex has group value with the other structures at Swithland Reservoir Water Works.
