Description

The monument to Mary Smith is located in the churchyard approximately 11 metres southeast of the south porch of the Church of St Mary and St Peter. This large upright chest tomb dates from the mid to late 18th century and is made of sandstone. It features a flat inscribed top with a moulded edge, quarter balusters, and a slightly fielded panel on the north side, along with a moulded base resting on a plain platform. The tomb commemorates Mary, the wife of Peter Smith, who passed away in 1776. The design of the tomb appears to be older than the date inscribed, and at the time of the survey in December 1983, one of the panels was covered with ivy. The monument is situated on a raised area of the churchyard, immediately southwest of the climbing approach path.
