Description
Day House Farmhouse, granary, and attached barn are a farmhouse, granary, and barn that have been modified, with the granary now serving as a dwelling. The buildings date from the 17th and 19th centuries. The farmhouse is rendered and features a slate roof with coped gables, each having a brick stack, and an off-centre ridge stack on the right. The granary and barn are constructed from squared sandstone rubble and have a slate roof with a hipped outer end. The farmhouse is in an L-shape with a return wing at the left end, to which a lower and later extension has been added. The granary and barn run parallel to the road, continuing the line of the farmhouse.
The farmhouse is 2½ storeys tall with a three plus one window arrangement. The first floor has three 3-light wood casements with transoms and one 2-light casement without a transom, all set under wood lintels and with a plain wall band below the eaves. The ground floor features 20th-century French doors, a central door in a moulded surround with a gabled porch, a late 20th-century casement, and a 3-light casement. The granary has three 20th-century openings on the first floor, accessed by a flight of nine stone steps. The barn contains three 2-light square casements with wood mullions above three plank doors, one of which is located to the right of the upper windows, and has a return hipped end with a floor over an open bay, featuring some slate hanging.
The interior has been considerably modified. At the right end, there is a large bressummer fireplace with a bread oven and a salt store, along with some chamfered beams. A solid oak tread newel stair leads from the first floor to the roof space; the lower flight is now enclosed but is reputed to be original. The granary has a lower floor that is vaulted in brick with a wide-span flat barrel vault.
