Description

The Smith monument, located in the churchyard and 4 metres north of the chapel of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, is a chest tomb from the early 19th century. It is made of freestone and features a very large angled chest that stands on claws atop a plain plinth. The side panels are festooned with text, and it has a heavy cornice topped by antefixae. The stepped slab is finished with a gadrooned urn. The earliest legible date on the monument is 1815, commemorating Elizabeth, the wife of Reverend Bartholomew Deeke Smith, M.A.
