Description

Parish's House is a Grade II* listed building located in Timsbury, dating from around 1816. It is a significant extension of an earlier house and is attributed to Thomas Baldwin of Bath for Captain Parish R.N. The structure features a combination of ashlar and rubble with slate roofs.

The main block is a square layout with three bays on each side, characterized by angle pilasters, a flat cill band, and a cornice. The entrance elevation showcases all sash windows, with those on the ground floor set back in wings and placed within arched recesses. The central bay is highlighted by a large convex porch in the Doric order, which includes sidelights and a central curved stone door with a hood supported by consoles.

On the garden side, there is a prominent two-storey bow with sash windows above and French windows below, set between recessed panels, all still equipped with original sliding louvred shutters. The elevation is further enhanced by tri-partite sashes below and additional sashes above. The adjoining west elevation is simpler, featuring tall sashes on the ground floor, a blocked center below recessed panels, and five plain sashes.

The office wing, also two storeys high with three windows, has three sashes above a colonnade, which is now behind a 20th-century glazed conservatory. The entrance side features sashes and an off-centre round-headed door with a fanlight.

Inside, the building remains largely unaltered and is in very good decorative order. The inner porch and top-lit stairwell exhibit a subtle interplay of curved planes, and the ornate wrought and cast iron handrail is intact, along with the doors, architraves, and cornices. An early blown air central heating system is also present. For further details, refer to the source by Christopher Hussey in Country Life.
