Description

The Smith monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, 3 metres north of the nave of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and is made of freestone. The tomb features an ornate cambered and moulded slab that is supported by four diagonal console buttresses. The ends of the tomb display shields, one inscribed with text and the other bearing the Smith family arms. The sides are adorned with cartouches beneath festoons, which also contain text. The earliest recorded date associated with the monument is 178-.
