Description
The pair of Pope monuments, located about 8 meters northeast of the Couling monument in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, consists of two chest tombs. The northern tomb commemorates Thomas Pope Senior, who died in 1759, while the southern tomb is for Thomas Pope, who died in 1816. Both monuments are made of limestone.
The northern tomb features a moulded plinth and capping on the base, a fluted frieze, plain end ovals with low relief spandrels, and sides divided into two plain ovals also with low relief spandrels. It has a stepped tent top with curved edges and longitudinal roll moulding.
The southern tomb also has a moulded plinth and capping on the base, but it features a plain frieze and recessed end panels. The sides display plain ovals in rectangular frames with low relief spandrels and flanking reeded strips, topped with a stepped tent top that has straight edges.
