Description

This is a group of seven chest tombs located immediately south of the south nave wall in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin. They date from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century and are all made of limestone. Each tomb features a moulded plinth and capping on the base, with recessed or fielded rectangular panels on the ends and sides, complemented by flanking fluted strips. Some side panels are adorned with elaborately carved cartouches for inscriptions, most of which are still legible. The tombs have two-step tent tops with curved edges and flattened tops. The exception is the tomb of Daniel Iles, who died in 1824, located furthest to the southwest; it lacks a visible base, has a fluted frieze, and features a three-step tent top with straight edges. The tombs are arranged in three rows from east to west, reading from south to north: Row 1 includes Hannah Arkell, who died in 1818, and Daniel Iles, who died in 1824. Row 2 includes Dorothy Arkell, who died in 1780, John Arkell, who died in 1797, and Thomas Arkell, who died in 1839. Row 3 includes William Iles, who died in 1850, and William Arkell, who died in 1831.
