Description
Tuckwell House is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a detached private house. The core of the building dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later additions from the late 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof. Originally, there was a very large external stepped stone stack, which has now been moved to the center of the house, along with a small new stone end stack to the right and a rear stone stack that has a moulded cornice.
The oldest part of the house is on the left, which has a gable end facing the street and a cross gable on the right. This section is two storeys high with an attic and has an additional two-storey wing to the right. The left-hand block features a coped verge with kneelers and the remains of a finial, along with a single casement light in the gable. There are two 12-pane sash windows in plain flush stone surrounds on both the first and ground floors. The left-hand return side has several 3-light wooden casements with timber lintels. The right-hand wing includes two paired 2-light wooden casements under timber lintels on the first floor, a 3-light window to the right on the ground floor, and a half-glazed 4-panel door to the left. This door is framed by a radial fanlight in moulded stone surrounds and is topped with a 20th-century semi-circular hood supported by wooden pillars.
