Description
Wharf House is a former wharf and wharfinger's house located on the Thames and Severn Canal, dating from around 1789. The building features roughcast on a stone plinth with alternating stone quoins, which are also rendered over, and has a slate roof with no visible stacks. It is a single large range, two storeys high, with a central attic beneath a wide shallow pediment. The pediment is adorned with stone banding and an oval glazed oculus at the center of the band at the base.
The central section of the house has two windows with four-pane sashes, originally twelve-pane, set in plain stone surrounds that include a keystone. There are two similar windows on the ground floor, along with a central doorway that has the same stone surrounds, although it is partially obscured by a 19th-century gabled timber porch. Above the doorway is a fire insurance plaque, though the name of the company is not visible.
The flanking wings originally had twelve-pane sashes on the first floor, but these have been altered to half blockers with two-light wood casements in the upper half. Below these, there is a door with a continuous vertical stone surround for both the door and window. The side wings were originally part of the wharf and both retain their original stone floors on the ground floor. A parapet wall at the top masks the slope of the roof, which continues the line of the pediment. Wharf House is one of three identical buildings, with others located in Cirencester (now demolished) and Cricklade (which has been altered), and it remains in nearly original condition.
