Description
The School House is an original school building from 1750 that has been converted into the headmaster's house and is now used as additional accommodation for the school, including a library and resource room. It is constructed from random coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins and features a stone slate roof with a large brick stack. The building has a squarish shape with a small gable facing the road and a gable to the east, which sweeps down to form a catslide roof on the north side. It is a single storey with an attic and has scattered fenestration, primarily consisting of 2-light wooden casements.
The central entrance on the east side features a 6-panel door, with the top two panels glazed and topped by a 19th-century gabled hood supported by wooden struts. To the left of the door is a round-headed stone window with a beaded edge, keystone, and impost blocks. A stone inscription plaque located between the floors on the north gable reads: "Kempsford Charity School/Indowed by Thomas late LD Visct Weymouth/with an Annual Salary of ten Pounds/Augmented by Thomas present L Visct/Weymouth with Timber for its Building/the ground whereon it stands and/Garden Rent free for ever/ Ere(.ted by the Inhabitants, as a testi/mony of Gratitude for those Benefacti/ons, as well as to promote useful/Learnings A.D.1750". Inside, there are two chamfered and stopped beams on the ground floor.
