Description
Nos 43 and 45 on The Street are a pair of cottages built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with some rendering on the front, and feature gabled pantile roofs. The cottages have a brick ridge stack at the front and a stone end stack on the rear wing. Each cottage consists of a parlour and an adjoining stair lobby in the front range, with service areas in the rear wings.
The buildings are two storeys high and have a four-window range. No 43 features a central plank door and segmental-arched windows, including a two-light wood-mullioned window on the ground floor to the right. No 45 has flat arches over an early 19th-century six-panelled door (two of the panels are glazed) to the right and a window to the left, with segmental arches over two-light leaded casements on the first floor.
Inside, both cottages include plank doors, panelled shutters, and both chamfered and plain beams. They each have coppers in the rear service wings. No 45 has an early 19th-century fireplace with reeded jambs in the rear and an early to mid-19th-century fireplace with rosettes flanked by cupboards in the front. The rear room of No 45 features a large window, likely intended to provide light for domestic gloving or weaving. These cottages represent a well-preserved example of early rural workers' housing.
