Description
Didmarton House is a large semi-detached house dating to the mid-18th century. It is situated on the south side of The Street in Didmarton. The house is built with pebbledash render on a cemented plinth, and has a stone slate roof with three stone stacks at the front and one at the rear. The plan is L-shaped, with smaller ranges forming the angle.
The house has two storeys and an attic. Originally, it had four bays, featuring mostly 16-pane sashes to the first floor, with one window directly above another in the left-hand bay. These windows are set within painted, plain architraves. A small two-light casement window is located in the second bay, and is accompanied by a stone doorcase with a large, flat hood supported by console brackets. The door itself is a six-panel design, with the top two panels glazed, a fielded centre panel, and a lower flush beaded panel. A small, high three-light window is situated to the left, while the right-hand side incorporates two large, 19th-century canted bays with 8/16/8-pane sashes, a moulded wood cornice and vertical 'pilaster' strips between the windows. Scattered casement windows are also present on the right-hand return.
The front facade features trefoil-headed, two-tier wrought iron railings and a gate, set into a moulded stone plinth and extending across the entire front, with short returns to the house. These are of considerable group value.
