Description

Number 44 is a detached house located on the north side of The Street in Didmarton. Originally, it was probably two adjoining houses, later becoming a house and village store, and dates from the mid to late 18th century. The building features a roughcast faced rubble stone exterior on a stone plinth, topped with a stone slate roof and concrete stacks at the ends and ridge.

The structure is a large single range of two storeys and an attic, with a rear outshut that almost forms a catslide. The left section, which was formerly used as stores, has a Venetian window on the first floor above two inserted 16-pane fixed lights. The right section has three 12-pane sash windows, with the central one being narrower, above two 16-pane sashes on the ground floor. All windows are framed with plain stone architraves, featuring small raised keystones on the ground floor.

On the right-hand side, there is a central doorcase with a wooden trellis porch and a flat hood that has a swept metal roof. The door consists of six beaded panels, with the top two being glazed. Inside the right section, there are panelled internal shutters.

At the front, a small section of coped coursed stone wall extends forward from each end for about 1.5 meters, linked by plain wrought iron railings and a gate set into a moulded stone plinth that runs across the entire frontage.
