Description

Number 8 is a house dated 1837, though it may have earlier origins. It is constructed of coursed rubblestone with stone dressings and quoins, topped with a buff plain-tile roof featuring stone and brick ridge and end stacks. The building has a 4-unit plan with a staircase at the rear, standing two storeys tall with an attic. The front has a four-window range of unhorned tripartite sashes, some in reeded cases, including a 2:12:6/6:2/2 arrangement, and an 8/8 sash above the door to the centre right. The ground floor features similar tripartite sashes and a part-glazed door set in a moulded round-arched doorcase, which is sheltered by an iron ogee-headed trellis porch. On the right end facing High Street, there is a 6/6 sash with a casement and a boarded window above. The rear includes a 10/6 round-arched sash.

To the left of the house, there is a small court of outbuildings that are lower than the house, which includes a wash-house with an open fireplace and coppers, as well as a coach house with a loft above. A tall brick wall extends from the right end along High Street, with a short return by the drive. The garden entrance is accessed by two steps and features a 6-panel door under a brick segmental arch.

Inside, there is a stick baluster staircase and panelled doors with moulded surrounds. Some fireplaces are simply moulded and contemporary, with cast-iron hob grates. In the attic, the date 1837 is displayed in large numerals on a chimney breast. The roof rafters were renewed in the 20th century, although the ties and some other elements remain original.
