Description
Number 18 is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century or earlier, with alterations made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior features incised stucco and a steeply-pitched slate roof that is hipped on the main block and gabled at the rear right, which may indicate a truncated former wing. There are large brick stacks, including one at the front of the ridge, left of center on the main block, and an external rubblestone stack with a square brick shaft at the rear right.
The building has a three-unit plan with an axial stack between two rooms on the left and a short rear wing with an end stack. There is also a lean-to single-storey garage to the left. The structure is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The first floor features 8/8-pane sash windows with horns, while the ground floor has three plate-glass sashes. There are 20th-century doors at both the far left and right. The returns have no windows, and there are 20th-century windows at the rear.
Inside, the interior has been remodeled, but some early 19th-century architraves remain. The early 19th-century collar-beam trusses in the roof are pegged. Additionally, there is a painted rubblestone wall attached to the front right-hand corner of the property, which is approximately 2 meters high and projects forward for about 2 meters, topped with a rough stone finial.
