Description

Numbers 1 and 3 are a pair of semi-detached houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from limestone rubble, Plymouth stone, and feature freestone dressings. The houses have a continuous slate roof with stacks on the front slopes of the gable ends; the left stack is rendered and truncated, while the right stack is brick.

The buildings are three storeys tall, including an attic floor, and present a symmetrical three-window range. They feature a continuous cornice and moulded coping at the parapet, a low plinth, and rendered pilasters. The second floor has 3/3-pane sash windows, while the other floors have 6/6-pane sash windows, with margin panes on the side windows. The central bay is slightly stepped forward, and the first-floor central window has small doors below that provide access to a reed-edged balcony on brackets, which serves as a porch. This balcony is adorned with fine cast-iron trellis railings.

The paired central doors consist of six panels each and are topped with pointed-arch overlights featuring Gothic glazing bars, all beneath a shared semi-elliptical arch. The returns of the houses are rendered, with 20th-century windows on the left side, while the upper part of the right return is slate-hung.

A Devon limestone plinth, now flush with the pavement, encloses the former forecourts, with the right side (No. 3) retaining spearhead railings with urn finials. This distinguished pair of semi-detached houses has an unusually unified facade and a shared entrance.
