Description
The former Church of England Primary School, now converted into housing, was likely built around 1870 by J Rowell. It features coursed, squared, and snecked rubble with freestone dressings and a slate roof, showcasing a Gothic Revival style. The building has a nearly symmetrical design with a low central gable that includes a brick stack and wavy bargeboards. This central gable is flanked by slightly projecting full-height coped gables that lead to long rear wings, creating a reversed 'U' plan. Small porch gables are situated on either side of these wings. The structure is connected on the right to the chapel of St Mary by a crenellated wall with a granite arch, which likely dates back to the 14th century.
Each gable features shallow pointed arches that hold 20th-century windows. The left gable has a trefoil opening, while the right gable includes a similar opening beneath a bellcote, which does not contain a bell. The small gabled porches on the far left and right have planked doors set in shouldered openings, topped with blind panels that have trefoil heads. Additional architectural details include a plinth, coped verges, a brick stack over the central gablet, which has cusped bargeboards and a segmental-pointed window, as well as a pointed-arched door. There are two more stacks at the eaves in the lateral angles leading to the rear courtyard, and a ventilator is located on the left ridge. The interior has not been inspected.
