Description

The Church of England Primary School, built around 1860, is a single-storey building designed in a Gothic revival style reminiscent of the 13th century. It is part of a unified composition with St James's Church and the parsonage, created by architect G Bidlake. The school features blue engineering brick with stone details and a tiled roof that displays contrasting bands and ornamental metal ridge cresting.

The front of the building is asymmetrical, with two projecting wings that have stone-coped gables and kneelers. These wings are connected by a range of four bays, each bay containing a two-light window with a quatrefoil head, set within a coped gable that also has moulded kneelers. There is a low entry porch located at the angle between the range and the right-hand wing, as well as an entry through the bell tower situated between the range and the left-hand wing. The left-hand gable extends as a short range, featuring one similar two-light window set in a gablet. Each wing's gable wall has a stepped three-light window with a low transom and a stopped hood mould above it, along with a stone quatrefoil light at the apex of each gable. The bell tower includes an open arched stone bell cage topped with a tiled spirelet. The school is set within a forecourt that has stone and brick gate piers, iron gates, and railings.
