Description

The Church of St Mary, located on Highweek Street in Newton Abbot, is a former church that has been converted into housing. It features a mid-15th century tower built under the patronage of the Yardes of Bradley Manor on Totnes Road. The church includes flanking additions, such as St Mary's Church Hall, which was built in 1826, and underwent further alterations in 1870 by JW Rowell. It was remodelled in 1992.

The building is constructed with roughcast over rubble and has a slate roof. The plan consists of the former tower, nave, and north aisle, with St Mary's Church Hall attached to the right. The exterior of the tower is divided into three stages and features a crenellated parapet, corner buttresses with obelisk finials, and diagonal buttresses. The belfry openings are flat-headed and louvred, except for a pointed-arched two-light window with panel tracery. The second stage is plain, while above it is a three-light 19th-century window with panel tracery, situated over a 19th-century recessed red sandstone pointed arch that leads to a set-back 20th-century door. To the left of the tower is a pent-roofed aisle with a crenellated parapet, which includes a three-light window similar to that of the tower, above a similar arch and door.

The interior has been altered, and various features, including the mid-15th century east window of the south aisle, were removed in 1904-1905 to St Mary Abbotsbury on Waverley Road.
