Description

No. 1 Highweek Street is a town house that has been converted into commercial premises, built in the early 19th century. The building features brick laid in Flemish bond with some burnt headers on a plinth of Plymouth Stone.

The exterior has a slate roof with wide bracketed eaves and a symmetrical façade. A central Tuscan prostyle porch is supported by granite columns and topped with a cast-iron trellised balustrade. The windows are eight over eight sashes set beneath flat arches with prominent voussoirs. The voussoirs, pilasters, and platband have been rendered in concrete. French doors lead to the balcony above the porch. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a segmental arched overlight that has a circular pane in the center. The other elevations have been rendered and feature irregular fenestration.

Inside, Lovegate House has been extensively modernised, including the installation of a modern 20th-century principal stair and the loss of some historic features. However, it still retains a few six-panel doors and some window shutters.

Lovegate House is believed to have been constructed around 1810 and first appears on the Ordnance Survey first edition map of 1890, where it is shown in approximately its current form, despite considerable alterations to the street plan in the area. It is designated at Grade II for its attractive neo-classical symmetrical façade, notable porch, deep eaves cornice, and as a fine example of a late Georgian Devon townhouse that incorporates fashionable architectural motifs into the traditional brick design.
